Adding chemical mixtures

The following walkthrough describes how to add a chemical mixture to your LabCup database.

Picture 1 - Accessing the LabCup menu

Open the LabCup app

Log in using your University username and password

Select the menu button at the top left of the screen.

Note: Your initial screen will vary from user to user, but the menu button should always be there.

Picture 2 - Select Stock Control from the menu

From the menu, select ‘Stock Control’.

Picture 3 - Select Add or Edit from the sub-menu

From the ‘Stock Control’ submenu, select ‘Add or Edit Item’.

Picture 4 - Add or Edit Inventory screen

This takes you to the ‘Add or Edit Inventory’ screen.

Apply one of the barcode stickers supplied to your group to the chemical’s container.

Leave the 'Inventory type’ selection on ‘Chemical’ and select the camera icon in the barcode section to scan your first item’s barcode.

Picture 5 - view from devices camera

The screen changes to the view from the device’s camera.

The red line overlaid on the view is where you want to line the barcode up.

Picture 6 - positioning the barcode within the camera field

Line the barcode up with the red line and the software will automatically read it and return to the ‘Add or Edit Inventory’ screen.

Picture 7 - Barcode added to the Add or Edit Inventory

You can see that the barcode has been translated into its alphanumeric.

Note: if a barcode should fail to scan for any reason, the number can always be entered manually in the box provided.

Picture 8 - entering a brand and/or product number

The bottle label won't be recognisable to LabCup, you are required to enter the ‘Brand’ and ‘Product number’ manually.

LabCup won’t allow these fields to be left blank, for ‘Brand’ enter FBMH followed by the group name – these have been entered already so LabCup should autocomplete.

Picture 8a - entering a brand and/or product number

For each group’s specific brand name, you can define a unique identifier – choose something that makes sense for your lab.

If this is a mixture or waste that you will be entering again, make sure you make a note of it, as re-using it will transfer the details from this item to your new item and save you a lot of time.

Picture 9 - when all fields are completed select Next

Once the 'Brand' and 'Product number' fields are filled in, select ‘NEXT’.

Picture 10 - at this point you could upload a new SDS, this can only be done via a PC

LabCup then invites you to UPLOAD NEW SDS for the chemical.

In rare cases, some mixtures or wastes that are associated with commercially available kits will have an SDS that you can use here.

Select ‘NEXT’.

Picture 11 - enter the chemical name as written on the bottle

On the next screen there is an opportunity to enter the name of the chemical.

Select ‘Chemical name on the bottle’ and enter the name.

Picture 12 - entering CAS numbers

If you know the CAS number for the chemical, enter it in the box, otherwise select ‘NEXT’.

Picture 13 - adding quantity, owner and location information

Fill in the normal fields: volume, owner, responsible person, lab, location data and expiry date.

Picture 14 - navigate to the chemical data section

To list the components of the chemical, we need to go to the ‘Chemical Data’ section of the entry.

To do this, select ‘OVERVIEW’.

Picture 15 - Select Chemical product data

From the ‘Overview’ section, select the ‘Chemical product data’ tab at the top of the screen.

Picture 16 - enter the physical state of the chemical

Optional: Click on the ‘State’ field and select the appropriate phase for your chemical mixture.

You can also enter the relative quality of your chemical in the ‘Quality’ field.

Picture 17 - listing the components of the mixture

To list the components of the mixture, go to the bottom of the screen and select the ‘Components’ checkbox.

Picture 18 - adding components to the chemical mixture

To add the first component, select the green ‘Add Component’ button.

Picture 19 - enter the component details

In the box that appears, enter the name of the first component.

Note: if you are using a chemical which is already entered in the LabCup inventory, you can enter its barcode number instead

Picture 20 - when component information complete click CREATE NEW

Select 'CREATE NEW'

Picture 21 - select the concentration from the dropdown box

The component is now listed – select the dropdown in the ‘Concentration’ column.

Picture 22 - select the correct concentration format

In our example, the components are measured in relative volumes, so we choose choose ‘V/V% [m3/m3] – V(i)/V(total)’ from the dropdown list.

Select the blank field in the 'Quantity' column.

Picture 23 - adding the proportions for individual components

As our recipe had 200ml methanol in a final volume of 1L, we have entered a percentage of 20 here.

To add the next component, you have to scroll the screen to the right.

Picture 24 - add component

Select ‘ADD COMPONENT’.

Picture 25 - repeat this process for each component

Repeat this process to complete your list of components.

Select ‘NEXT’ twice to get to the ‘Hazard classification’ section.

Picture 26 - entering hazard classification information

On the ‘Hazard classification’ screen, select ‘Hazard class’ and choose the appropriate hazard type you want to add to the item.

In this example, we are adding the hazard type ‘Flammable liquid’.

Picture 27 - entering the hazard category

Next, select the 'Hazard category'

In this example, we will select ‘Category 2’.

Picture 28 - to complete this section click ADD

Then click ‘ADD’.

Picture 29 - the correct pictogram will then be added

The appropriate pictogram appears in the item description.

You can continue to add hazardous information in the same way, or select ‘NEXT’ several times to reach the final screen.

Picture 30 - completing the item

To finally save the item, select ‘FINISH’.

Picture 31 - returned to the Add or Edit inventory screen

LabCup returns to the ‘Add or Edit Inventory’ screen, ready to add another chemical, with a notification in the top-right that the chemical’s entry has been saved.
