Office for Open Research (OOR)

The Office for Open Research is committed to cultivating an open and responsible research environment at The University of Manchester, and to increasing research impact through Open Research practices.

Research Data Management (RDM)

The Library’s Research Data Management team provides guidance, information, support and training around planning, managing and sharing research data. 

Open Access (OA)

The Library’s Open Access team supports researchers to share their research publications openly, via their publisher and/or Pure, the University’s Current Research Information System (CRIS). 

Research Indicators

The Library’s Research Indicators team provides services and tools to support researchers in understanding the impact that their work is having within their field, and in the wider world.

    As Strategic Lead for RDM I’m responsible for the University’s strategic direction and service offerings that facilitate best practice in RDM for our research community. Within the OOR, I lead the Library's RDM Team whose services include training, advocacy, and advice, alongside platforms to facilitate effective data management planning and research data publishing. As part of the RLP team I am project lead for RLP1 Project U (Improve management, sharing, publishing and preservation of research data (U) and am PS lead for the Open, Responsible & Reproducible Research theme as the programme moves into its next 5-year phase.

    Operational leadership and management of all services, projects, and team communication. I oversee operational delivery of all our research support services and activities, working closely with Open Research Librarians to plan, develop, and expand our offer to the University’s research community. I am the Library REF lead and a member of the Staff Management Forum (SMF) planning group.

    I lead the Library's Research Indicators service, providing bibliometric analysis to help the University better understand research impact and support data-driven decision making. The Research Indicators team is committed to the Responsible use of Metrics, and in support of this I contribute to the University's engagement with the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (COARA).

    I co-ordinate the Library's Open Access (OA) service, which helps researchers to make their publications more accessible. The service team supports the OA Gateway and Pure, manages OA funding requests and delivers training as part of MRE. I'm responsible for assessing publisher OA agreements and lead on the implementation of funder OA policies. I'm also Secretary for the Open Research Strategy Group, a university-level group that provides governance for Open Research activity chaired by the Vice-President for Research.

    I co-ordinate the Library's Research Indicators service, which provides a sector-leading suite of clear, accessible services that help the University to better understand research impact and supports responsible, data-driven decision making. I co-ordinate the Research Intelligence budget, which ensures we have access to all the necessary platforms to enable the effective running of the service and oversee research metrics training, enquiries, and projects. I serve as the Library’s business lead for Pure and contribute to the development and delivery of our MRE training programme. I also oversee our researcher enquiries team and I’m a member of the Library LibAnswers governance group.

    I’m a member of the RDM team, coordinating the Research Lifecycle Programme/Office for Open Research collaborative Research Data Stewardship project. I am a member of the Research Data Alliance (RDA) Interest Group on Professionalising Data Stewardship and organise the MRE ‘Research Data Conversations’ series. I'm also the group lead for the Research Data Stewardship Community on the Research IT CaDoR (Computation and Data in Research) network.

    I work in the RDM team and am responsible for co-delivering the Library's RDM services, which includes our Data Management Planning service via DMPonline, MRE training, and providing expert advice and guidance to researchers. I am the operational lead for our data repository Figshare, including service development, technical support, and the escalation point for complex enquiries. I am a member of the Research Data Alliance (RDA) Interest Group on Professionalising Data Stewardship.

    I support the delivery of the Library's Open Access (OA) service. I work primarily on Gold OA, providing expert advice and guidance to researchers at the university on how to make their scholarly publications openly accessible, and compliant with institutional, national, and funder OA policies. I assess OA funding requests, liaise with publishers regarding OA payments and agreements, support the management of funder OA block grants, deliver training as part of the MRE programme, and support the delivery of team projects.  I am a member of the Library's EDI working group, and the sector-wide SCONUL EDI group.

    I support the delivery of the Library's OA and Pure (Research Outputs) services. I work primarily on Green OA, providing expert advice and guidance to researchers on how to make their scholarly publications openly accessible via the institutional repository, and compliant with university, publisher, and funder OA policies. I work closely with the mediated deposit service (OA Gateway) team to create, edit, and validate Pure records, and implement the N8's Rights Retention policy. I am the RS Environmental Sustainability group rep and a Library Microsoft365 champion.

    I support the delivery of the Library’s RDM service. I am the first point of contact for RDM enquiries and provide researchers with advice and guidance on using RDM services including the University’s research data repository, Figshare, and data management planning tool, DMPonline. I provide feedback on data management plans (DMPs) through the DMP review service, and I’m involved in the delivery of RDM workshops through the MRE programme. I am secretary for the RDM Operations Group.

    I support the delivery of the Library’s Research Indicators service, answering enquiries and working on consultancy projects which help the University to better understand its research impact. I contribute to our AI-driven Data Triptych project, which aims to unify our data sources and streamline analytics and reporting across all our services. I am interested in how we can align the Indicators service with Open Research principles, through learning to use research metrics responsibly and integrating open data sources into our practice. I also support the delivery of the RDM service.

Open Research Metadata Assistant

    Within the OA Gateway team, I support researchers by contributing to the management of research outputs through our online repository, Pure (Green OA). I help our researchers to present their work on the university's online platform, Research Explorer. I also support researchers in being compliant institutional, national, and funder OA policies. I contribute to the creation of an environment that fosters responsible and transparent dissemination of research outputs. Additionally, I provide administrative support for the Library’s MRE training programme, and lead on the coordination and scheduling of OOR team meetings and events.

  • Yong Kim

    I am part of the OA team and provide administrative support for the OA Gateway; responsible for creating and maintaining publication records for research outputs via the University’s repository, Pure. I also assist researchers with OA compliance of the policies set forth by the university, funders, publishers, and Research Excellence Framework(REF), which contributes to an environment fostering responsibilities and transparent dissemination of research outputs.  Other duties include managing invoice emails, and handling email enquiries coming via out OOR Triage Team.
