Collections

A department with four distinct but interconnected areas of activity,  developing new collections (both print and digital) and managing our existing stock.

About the team

  • We offer a store retrievals service. Students and researchers can request any book that’s in our Stores, and we do multiple trips a week to get your requests from Store to the CollectMe room, usually by the next working day.
  • We keep collections circulating by managing the book sorter machine and reshelving returned books. We can help with anomalies where a book doesn’t seem to be on the right shelf.
  • If books need to be moved around our sites, or collected from bookbins at the SU or Halls of Residence, we’re the ones who collect them, using our e-van or e-cargobike.
  • We develop new collections and services like streaming on Kanopy or Academic Video Online (AVON), or Text & Data Mining access to our collections. We triage all requests for audio-visual material, whether for research, teaching or learning.
  • We are officially called the Collections Team, but we generally use our old name: Collection Development and Management, because we develop collections and manage collections.
