Fire Arrangements
Fire Alarm

Two Stage Alarm

In the main Oxford Road Campus (ORC) hospital buildings where there are wards and patient areas there is a ‘progressive horizontal evacuation’ procedure in place where only the areas that are affected are evacuated.  This progressive horizontal evacuation procedure also applies to the University research floors. The alarms in these areas sound either ‘continuously’ or ‘intermittently’.  The continuous signal sounds in the area where the alarm has been raised and the intermittent signal will sound in adjacent areas/wards to put them on alert.  In other areas of the hospital the fire alarm will not sound at all.  This is so that only the affected areas are aware of the fire alarm so that other departments can carry on as normal and procedures are not interrupted unnecessarily.

On the University research floors (non-ward areas) – TWO STAGE ALARM

Intermittent alarm - In non-ward areas of the main hospital where there is an intermittent signal then staff, students and visitors should not leave your area since you might inadvertently enter a dangerous neighbouring zone. Carry on with your duties unless you are in personal danger, close all doors and be prepared for evacuation.

Continuous alarm - In non-ward areas of the main hospital where there is a continuous signal then staff, students and visitors should evacuate to a safe area.  This can be either an area where the alarm is sounding intermittently OR an area inside the building where the alarm is not sounding at all OR outside the building.

Fire Alarm Test Time Not carried out on a set time each week

Fire Alarms are tested according to a schedule every 3 months.

The majority of the fire alarm testing is SILENT.

On alarm testing days the testers need to gain access the smoke detectors in all areas.

You can expect a few short alarm blasts when they test the sounders in each testing zone.

Evacuation

On hearing a continuous alarm you MUST EXIT the building IMMEDIATELY.
