Collections, Teaching and Research

    The Collections, Teaching, and Research team cares for and develops the Library’s world-renowned Special Collections, which include rare books, archives, manuscripts, maps, visual materials, and digital resources. The team works at the forefront of curatorial practice to ensure these collections are accessible and impactful for research, teaching, learning, and public engagement.

    Through expertise in collection management, cataloguing, and discovery, the team supports academics, students, and visitors in exploring and using the collections. They collaborate widely across the University and with national and international partners to advance scholarship, enhance the visitor experience at the John Rylands Library, and share these remarkable resources with diverse communities.

    Head of Collections, Teaching and Research

    The Head of Collections, Teaching, and Research at The University of Manchester Library is responsible for the strategic leadership, care, management and discovery of the Library’s outstanding Special Collections. 

    This includes rare books, maps, archives, manuscripts, visual collections, and digital materials. The role aims to position the collections at the forefront of curatorial practices to enhance research, teaching, learning, and public engagement.

    Research and Learning Manager

    Provides strategic leadership on innovative research and increased student engagement with special collections, facilitating world-class research and enhanced student experience. The manager also leads on inspiring public engagement with research arising out of special collections and supports the development of the John Rylands Research Institute and Library.

Curatorial Team

Curate Special Collections materials to exemplary standards with an audience-focussed approach, embedding collections into research and discovery, teaching and learning and public engagement activities. Provide collections-based support to all researchers and learners based on a working knowledge of designated collections.

Senior Curator (Visual Collections)

Special Collections Subject lead for Art History; Curatorial responsibility for western manuscripts and the art, photography and object collections (Visual).

Senior Curator (Science, Technology and Medicine Printed Collections)

Curate Special Collections materials to exemplary standards with an audience-focussed approach, embedding collections into research and discovery, teaching and learning and public engagement activities. Provide collections-based support to all researchers and learners based on a working knowledge of designated collections. 

Senior Curator (Creative Arts Archives)

Curate Special Collections materials to exemplary standards with an audience-focussed approach, embedding collections into research and discovery, teaching and learning and public engagement activities. Provide collections-based support to all researchers and learners based on a working knowledge of designated collections. 

Curator (Maps)

Curates the map collection to exemplary standards with an audience-focussed approach, embedding collections into research and discovery, teaching and learning and public engagement activities. Provide collections-based support to all researchers and learners.

Christian Brethren Archive Curator 

Curates the Christian Brethren Archive to exemplary standards with an audience-focussed approach, embedding collections into research and discovery, teaching and learning and public engagement activities. Provide collections-based support to all researchers and learners.

Non-Conformist Collections Curator 

Curates the Non-Conformist Collections to exemplary standards with an audience-focussed approach, embedding collections into research and discovery, teaching and learning and public engagement activities. Provide collections-based support to all researchers and learners.

Humanitarian Archive Curator 

Curates the Humanitarian Archive to exemplary standards with an audience-focussed approach, embedding collections into research and discovery, teaching and learning and public engagement activities. Provide collections-based support to all researchers and learners.

Curator (University, Scientific and Medical Archives and Heritage Collections)

Curate Special Collections materials to exemplary standards with an audience-focussed approach, embedding collections into research and discovery, teaching and learning and public engagement activities. Provide collections-based support to all researchers and learners based on a working knowledge of designated collections. 

Collections Assistant (Heritage)

Collections Assistant supporting the University Heritage Collections, undertaking a range of duties including collections management and promotions.

      Curator (Africa and Near East Collections)

      Special Collections subject lead for Archaeology, Classics & Ancient History, Egyptology and Middle Eastern Studies; Curatorial responsibility for Armenian, Ethiopian and Syriac manuscripts, Egyptian papyri, cuneiform.

      Curator (British Pop Archive)

      Special Collections subject lead for Sociology; Curator of the British Pop Archive.

      Curator (Global Manuscripts)

      Special Collections subject lead for Religions & Theology; Curatorial responsibility for global (non-European) manuscripts, Moses Gaster collections and pre-1700 Hebrew printing.

      Incunabula Cataloguer

      Creating fully-researched catalogue records for all of the fifteenth-century printed books at the Rylands. Promoting the Incunabula collection within The University of Manchester and elsewhere to ensure the widest publicity and use of the collection as possible.

      Curator (Manuscripts)

      Special Collections subject lead for Medieval and Early Modern History; Curatorial responsibility for English and European manuscripts and the Rylands Library archive.

      Curator (Rare Books)

      Special Collections subject lead for English Language & Linguistics, Drama & Music; Curatorial responsibility for post-1500 English printed collections, including English literature, private press and street literature.

      Collections Coordinator

      Coordinating the work of collections assistants, student placements and others to ensure a holistic approach to the management and development of the Special Collections, and to project manage activities such as collection moves and cataloguing projects; supporting Curatorial Practices managers in devising and implementing robust metrics and evaluation relating to the directorate’s support for research, teaching and learning, and public engagement.
