Management and disposal of waste

  • The most effective strategy for managing waste aims to maximize safety and minimise environmental impact, and considers these objectives from the time of purchase.
  • No activity should begin unless a plan for the disposal of both non-hazardous and hazardous waste has been considered.
  • This ensures compliance with a range of regulatory requirements and avoids unexpected difficulties, such as the generation of a form of waste where there are no facilities in place to dispose of it. When this has not been considered it can lead to stockpiles of waste (potentially hazardous) building up which can have a significant impact on safety.
  • It is the responsibility of the Principle Investigator and Line Manager to:
    • ensure all waste routes are correctly identified and used
    • ensure staff and students are correctly informed of the waste disposal routes
    • ensure staff and students comply with these routes
