Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell

Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell, whose term of office as President and Vice-Chancellor comes to an end on 31 July 2024, is to be recognised by the University for her outstanding career and service with:

  • An honorary degree (Doctor of Science) to be conferred on her (recommended by Awards and Honours Group and Senate)
  • The position of Professor Emerita to be conferred on her (recommended by Senate)
  • The Manchester Engineering Campus Development (MECD) to be named the Nancy Rothwell Building (recommended by Planning and Resources Committee).

These recognitions were unanimously agreed by the Board of Governors at its recent Board Meeting in line with all relevant policies.

Philippa Hird, Chair of the Board of Governors, said: “This recognition is a tribute to Nancy’s huge and sustained contributions over what will be 14 years in post as the University’s President and Vice-Chancellor, the first woman to hold that role in our 200-year history.

“These are deserved honours to her which recognise her leadership to so many aspects of the life of our university, including delivering the campus masterplan, and as an eminent scientist who has continued her dedication to her field of research.”

Nancy added: “I am very honoured to receive this recognition and would like to thank the Board and Senate, and the Awards and Honours Group. I would particularly like to thank the very many colleagues who contribute to all areas of our university.”

Nancy was also recently presented with an Outstanding Achievement Award by Times Higher Education at a ceremony in Liverpool.
