Academic probation to be extended by a year

29 Jul 2020

Change to academic probation guidance to take into account COVID-19 disruption

Academic colleagues who are on probation will have their probation period extended by a year as a matter of course if they feel their probation has been significantly disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Under the existing guidance outlined in the Probationary arrangements for newly appointed academic staff academic staff on probation have to make a case to their Head of School if they wish to extend their probationary period for any reason.

Given the widespread impact of COVID-19, the University’s Human Resources Sub-Committee has agreed that instead it should be assumed that academic probation will be extended by 12 months as a matter of course, unless both the probationer and their Head of School are happy that probation has been successfully completed despite any COVID-19 disruption.
