Our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion strategy

31 Oct 2022

Banji Adewumi provides more information on our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion strategy

Banji Adewumi, Director of Equality, Diversity & Inclusion

Dear colleagues,

I am thrilled to share the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) strategy with you.

This sets out our aims for the next three years to create an outstandingly inclusive place to work and study, characterised by equality, how we value diversity and where all have a sense of belonging. Our approach to EDI will enable us to achieve the goals set out in Our people, our values that sits at the heart of our University strategic plan, Our future.

Our EDI strategy takes a holistic approach that celebrates individuals and their many identities, extending beyond our statutory obligations, so that we become a truly inclusive organisation where EDI is embedded in all that we do and who we are.

Many of you, staff, students, alumni, partners, and members of the wider Manchester city region, took the time to share your ideas and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you. Your insight has helped shape this strategy and inform our three key priorities: inclusive environment and culture, diversity and equity across our community, inclusive practice.

I have shared a brief summary of each of these priorities below and I encourage you to watch our videos that provide a clear outline of each priority, our aims and how we will achieve them.

Inclusive environment and culture

We will create an inclusive, diverse and accessible environment where it is everyone’s responsibility to ensure all members of our University community are treated with fairness, dignity, respect and have a sense of belonging.  This will be reflected in our structures, our priorities and how we interact with each other.

Diversity and equity across our community

We will ensure diversity across all areas of our University community so that we are reflective of our city region, nationally and globally. We will have an inclusive approach and equality at all stages of student and staff recruitment through policies, practices and guidance.

 Inclusive practice

We will create an environment where all staff and students feel supported and are encouraged to achieve their full potential.

I am committed to delivering this strategy and embedding EDI into our structures, priorities and how we interact with each other. But the overall success relies on all of us thinking about EDI during our day-to-day activities.

I therefore invite you to help us achieve our aim and consider - what will you pledge to do differently?

Best wishes,

Banji Adewumi, Director of Equality, Diversity & Inclusion
