Prepare for PDRs: current process and future changes
22 Apr 2026
As announced in this week's Library Update, a new Performance and Development Review (PDR) process will be introduced in the next academic year.
From next academic year, the University will launch 'Performing at Manchester', replacing the single annual PDR review with four shorter discussions throughout the year. This new approach aims to create more timely, consistent, and supportive performance conversations, align individual objectives with team and University goals, and connect staff contributions to the Manchester 2035 strategy, helping everyone understand their role and feel valued.
For now, all staff should continue with the current (existing) PDR approach for reviews taking place between now and September. The Library Staff Learning and Development Hub remains your go-to resource, with a dedicated PDR section and practical tools to help you shape objectives, reflect on progress and plan your development.
For all staff - three quick wins before your PDR:
- Revisit your current goals: What should you keep, stop or start? (Bring examples of impact, learning and progress.)
- Identify one development priority: Choose something that aligns with your role now or helps you grow into what's next. The Hub's professional development areas covers skills like communication, personal effectiveness and career growth.
- Make a realistic plan: Small steps count. The Hub is designed to make it easy to find the right resource quickly.
With your manager, please arrange a time to complete your PDR using the current process, any time between now and September.
Managers and Leaders - supporting others through PDRs during transition:
While a new PDR process is coming in the next academic year, managers should continue to support their teams through the current process for all reviews up to September. The Hub's Managers and Leaders area signposts resources to help you lead with confidence, support your teams effectively and create a positive, inclusive working culture - including 'Developing People' and Library PDR guidance.
Planning training or conferences as part of development?
If PDR conversations lead to training requests, the Hub also sets out how to book courses, conferences and travel, including the approvals route and what colleagues should (and shouldn't) book themselves.
Next step
Prepare for your PDR using the Staff L&D Hub. Please continue to follow the current process until further notice, and stay tuned for more updates on the new approach coming next academic year.
