Humanities Bridgeford Street refurbishment
29 Jul 2022
Work ongoing to provide improved staff and student experience.
Over recent weeks work has begun on the foyer and outdoor quad areas of the Humanities Bridgeford Street building (HBS) to provide a more welcoming and attractive space for staff, students and visitors.
The work marks the beginning of a project to create a unique space for students to socialise, study and seek support whilst offering outdoor green space for all to enjoy. The next phase of the project, beginning shortly, will see the refurbishment of the former ‘Kantorowich’ library, transforming the space into a library and student study and support area.
The study space will include 34 individual study booths, 14 traditional desk spaces, three group study rooms with space for a total of 16 students, a map reading and digital archive viewing room, and 16 individual study chairs.
The student support area will comprise four confidential student consulting rooms, an area for less formal student consultations, and an open reception area for both Library and student support staff.
Finally, there will be an area for relaxation with close links to the HBS foyer and outdoor quad social space.
The project has been driven by the growth in student numbers in the School of Environment, Education and Development, and by the School’s growth as part of the Faculty’s Size and Shape initiative. Although the current library space is well used, it is not optimally laid out and the book collections are in need of review. The refurbished facilities will ensure the library can house those books which are in greatest demand, with others moving to the Main Library, enabling more space to be made available for student study.
The library space will remain closed for the duration of the work and is expected to reopen at the start of Semester 2, 2023.
We will keep you updated on the work as it progresses.
