South Asian Heritage Month at the AIU RACE Centre and Education Trust
27 Jul 2021
Share in the celebration of British South Asian heritage
South Asian Heritage Month, initiated in 2020, runs from 18 July to 17 August every year. It seeks to raise the profile of British South Asian heritage and history in the UK through education, arts, culture and commemoration.
As part of South Asian Heritage Month the AIU RACE Centre and Education Trust are holding three exciting and diverse events:
Exploring Manchester’s Histories: Sikhs in the City
Thursday 5 August, 6.00pm, online
Join Gurtek Singh and Maya Sharma for an exploration of Manchester's Sikh communities.
Gurtek will share his own family experiences, from when his grandparents (and others) first put down roots in Manchester and begun to build their community. He will also draw on the Centre’s and other archives, sharing photos and records which bring community histories to life.
Exploration of Family, Migration and Connection
Saturday 7 August, 11am, online
Author Shanaz Ahsan will be reading from her novel Hashim & Family (named an Observer Best Book of 2020, longlisted for the Authors’ Club First Novel Prize, and shortlisted for the Guardian Not the Booker Prize) followed by a question and answer session with young people from Ananna - Manchester Women's Bangladeshi Organisation.
The Roles We Play

A roundtable event chaired by Safina Islam.
