Research opportunities for University of Manchester researchers using UK Biobank
The University of Manchester is keen to promote research using UK Biobank - the world’s most comprehensive source of biomedical data for health research. The University has a strong and longstanding collaboration with the UK Biobank team.
What is the UK Biobank?
UK Biobank has collected biological, health and lifestyle information from 500,000 UK volunteers over the past 15 years. The dataset is continuously growing, with additions including the world’s largest set of whole genome sequencing data, imaging data from 100,000 participants and a first-of-its kind set of protein biomarkers from 54,000 participants. Researchers from across the world can apply to use the data to advance medicine and drive the discovery of new preventions, treatments and cures. Over 21,000 researchers, based in more than 60 countries, are using UK Biobank data, and more than 16,000 peer-reviewed scientific papers have been published using these data. The video below, hosted on UK Biobank's YouTube channel, provides an overview of this vast study.

Support for University of Manchester researchers using UK Biobank
The UoM UK Biobank community was established in 2018 to build a supportive network for all researchers using UK Biobank. The community builds connections between users and provides UK Biobank information, such as publications, seminars and conferences.
The UoM UK Biobank Users Group is a peer support network for University of Manchester researchers who use or intend to use UK Biobank for their research. The group is led by researchers from across the University and aims to enable UoM researchers to make best use of UK Biobank. The user group facilitates collaboration, shares best practices, and provides ongoing training and support for researchers, along with arranging seminars about UK Biobank.

Relocation of UK Biobank to Manchester
UK Biobank will be relocating to the Oxford Road Corridor in 2026. This is a tremendous opportunity to further accelerate these linkages for scientific, health and economic impact. This partnership will benefit from the University's strength in life sciences and UK Biobank’s resources and reputation as an international grade source of biodata and samples.
