Honorary Policy, Procedure and Guidance

Honorary appointments at The University of Manchester recognise distinguished individuals from other organisations who collaborate with University staff. These appointments are for those with significant achievements in research, teaching, or professional reputation, and who are expected to contribute meaningfully to the University. Honorary titles are not available to University employees and are unpaid.

Key Points:

  • Honorary appointments are awarded for collaboration, teaching, research, or support of University activities.
  • Titles include Honorary Teaching Associate, Research Fellow, Lecturer, Reader, Professor, and others, reflecting the individual’s standing and expected contribution. Inclusion of “Clinical” in the title will be allowed where appropriate.
  • Those people whose substantive NHS role is Consultant will be appointed as Honorary Senior Lecturer.
  • Appointments are typically for three years, with access to University library and computing facilities, and membership within a Faculty area.
  • Appointments do not constitute employment.

If you wish to apply for an honorary appointment, please speak with the appropriate Head of Division to discuss eligibility and the application process.
