Project timelines

The indicative project timelines below have been developed for workstreams associated with the FBMH Technical Review.

Please note these dates refer to when recommendations are taken to the Technical Review Oversight Group rather than final implementation which may rely on further University level approvals.

Workstreams

Activities within the Review fall into four workstreams:

Workforce service and design

Remit: To recommend options for workforce services and structures for the following three cohorts of technical staff.

Technology Platforms (Cohort 1)

Timeline: Complete

Our new organisational structure for the Technology Platforms was officially implemented on 1 August 2025. This followed a period of consultation with technical colleagues within this cohort during April and May.

The new structure aims to provide an efficient service for both technical colleagues and service users that aligns with our vision for the Technology Platforms which is to provide outstanding technical expertise in support of the delivery of impactful, globally recognised biomedical science and is underpinned by the University's PS Vision and Purpose objectives.

A new line management structure will provide a clear line of reporting and support for colleagues, whilst enabling collaboration with academic colleagues. In addition, job descriptions for roles within the platforms have been revised in alignment with academic strategies and future technological needs.

Recruitment of a new Head of Technical Operations for the Technology Platforms will begin shortly.

Training for line managers within the Technology Platforms will be delivered as part of the Skills and competency development workstream.

Activities related to this cohort will close at the end of September 2025 although there will be follow up check ins with impacted colleagues.

Skills development

Remit: To create development programs to upskill technical teams to meet the needs identified in workstream 1.

Timeline: September 2024 – ongoing

Finance costing and reporting

Remit: To identify options and processes whereby the Faculty can more effectively report and manage how technical resource is recovered.

Timeline: March 2024 – October 2024

Activities in this workstream are carried out simultaneously with those in Workforce Service and Design activities.

Health and Safety Support and Governance

Remit: To identify issues associated with H&S support and governance across the faculty and to define options to address the issues.

Timeline: April 2024 – October 2024

This workstream was formally closed in October 2024, with the following outcomes: A Compliance & Risk manager will be assigned to the teaching labs, and a review of the C&R team will be conducted separately from the Technical Review. Estates-related health and safety issues, previously deemed out of scope, will now be addressed through faculty-wide communications explaining the reporting routes and key contacts.

Discussions on roles, responsibilities, management support, and reporting will be incorporated into the Workforce Service and Design Workstream, with the business case approved.
