Danielle George appointed Associate VP for Teaching, Learning and Students

22 Apr 2020

Professor George moves from role in Faculty of Science and Engineering

Danielle George

Professor Danielle George has been appointed as our University’s new Associate Vice-President for Teaching, Learning and Students, starting this summer.

Working with the Vice-President for Teaching, Learning and Students, Professor April McMahon, Danielle will have a particular focus on online and blended learning, a subject that is of critical importance to our University and our students, now and in the future.

Danielle moves from the Faculty of Science and Engineering where she has been Vice Dean of Teaching and Learning since 2013, where she has played a prominent role in the re-structure of the Faculty and has led the new Teaching College.

Away from this role Danielle is Professor in Microwave Communication Engineering and her research is dedicated to solving one of the 14 world engineering grand challenges of the 21st century; engineering the tools for scientific discovery. To date her research has focused on delivering class-leading ultra-low noise receivers for space and aerospace applications. She is involved in the $1B astronomical instrument, the Square Kilometer Array (SKA), is the UK lead for amplifiers for the $1B Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) telescope and has worked with NASA and ESA on the development of instrumentation for researchers exploring the Big Bang. She will continue to teach undergraduate and postgraduate students and carry out research.

In 2014 she delivered the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures and was awarded the Royal Society Michael Faraday Prize in 2018. She has presented numerous science documentaries on the BBC including Horizon and is one of the originators of the Robot Orchestra, which aims to encourage young people to take an interest in engineering and music.

She was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2016 Birthday Honours for services to engineering through public engagement and is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and will become the President of the IET in October 2020.

Danielle said: “This new role comes at a time when the majority of our teaching and assessment has had to move online so I’m very much looking forward to getting started and working closely with all of the colleagues who have been doing amazing work, especially over the last few weeks.  Whenever we return to campus, online and blended learning is going to be more important than ever, so we need to make sure we continue to work hard to ensure our students have the best possible experience.”

Professor April McMahon added: “Dan is a great appointment to this role. Since I’ve arrived at the University, and especially during this pandemic, she has been an extremely effective and constructive member of the broader Teaching, Learning and Student team.  While these are difficult times, they bring genuine opportunities to work with colleagues and students to drive real improvements to our online and blended learning provision, and Dan will have an important role in achieving this.”
