Catering on campus – guidelines from Director of Estates and Facilities

13 Apr 2016

The University of Manchester wishes to ensure that catering is delivered in a safe and professional manner, by reputable suppliers who are able to demonstrate best practice

As the University Director responsible for food safety across campus, I am drawing to your attention the following advice and requirements.

When procuring catering, you should consider the University catering operators as your first choice. This will support our colleagues and keep as much revenue as possible on campus:

Taste Manchester or Chancellors Collection are the only caterers permitted to deliver to Centrally Timetabled Rooms (where catering is allowed), Whitworth Hall, Whitworth Corridor, the Council Chamber, and all bookable foyers.

Should you decide to use an external caterer, this must be one of the nominated suppliers which can be found on uniBuy, the University’s supplier database (under Provision of Food). This is reviewed every three years by the Directorate of Estates and Facilities. The suppliers on this list have been checked for food safety and no other suppliers should be used.

Members of staff (individually or on behalf of their work unit) MUST NOT undertake any catering of their own. By doing so they will be putting themselves and the University at risk. Serious contraventions of food safety legislation can cause serious personal harm and can result in significant fines running into millions of pounds and imprisonment. This includes the purchase of food from supermarkets (chilled food or food for reheating), takeaways and caterers NOT on the nominated supplier list.
