Guidance: Multi-Faith Prayer and Contemplation Space

The staff multi-faith prayer and contemplation space is located in Red 3.4. The room is available to Library colleagues who wants to use it for prayer, contemplation, or meditation, and has been designed to be a calm and peaceful space. Please note this space is not to be used by any students or staff outside the Library.

It includes chairs, rugs, prayer mats, reuseable shoe covers, and a PC with headset for online worship. These items and the room will be cleaned regularly (see below).

As part of the Library’s commitment to inclusivity, we hope that the Staff Multi-Faith Prayer and Contemplation Space is a place where everyone feels that they belong.

Using the prayer and contemplation space

This room is for prayer, contemplation, and meditation.

As a shared space, please follow the guidance below:

  • Be respectful to others who are using the room;
  • Do not bring incense burners or candles into the room or leave any posters, flyers or other materials here;
  • Return any furniture, books or mats to the storage cabinet provided and ensure the room remains clean and tidy;
  • If you require assistance, please speak to a member of the Library EDI Team.

Opening times

The prayer room is available during the Main Library’s opening hours.

Room capacity

This room has a limited capacity (up to seven people), and there may occasionally be a wait, or you may prefer to use other facilities nearby.

Maintenance

Library cleaning staff will clean the space once a week.

Please report to a member of the Library EDI Team if the facilities need attention.

Facilities and storage

There is shelving provided for your belongings and shoes during the time that you are using the prayer room. Shoes are permitted in the room, but please use the reusable shoe covers provided. Please leave the shoe covers on the shelves before leaving the room.

Please collect your belongings when you are leaving. The Library is not responsible for any personal belongings left in the room.
The nearest toilets are next to the room. 

Evacuation procedures in case of emergency

The nearest fire exit is next to the Staff Multi-Faith Prayer and Contemplation Space entrance, by walking down the stairs and out the fire exit directly at the bottom of the stairs.

In the event of a fire alarm, you must leave the building immediately. Fire alarm testing occurs every Friday at 10am.

Feedback

This space is being piloted for a year (March 2024 to March 2025). We welcome and appreciate any feedback, which can be used to improve the room and feed into the development of possible future spaces.
