Welcome an international student into your home

30 Jan 2013

HOST UK is looking for individuals or families who could offer just one or two invitations a year to international students.

A HOST UK visit

HOST provides a valuable service to colleges and universities by inviting their international students to spend a weekend, a day, or a few days at Christmas, in a private home.

The hosts are approved, open-hearted volunteers, who enjoy meeting people from other countries and wish to make them feel welcome in the UK.

Shared academic and other interests are taken into consideration in matching students with hosts. A HOST visit is about chatting and eating together, joining in with everyday life at home and perhaps in the local community, and maybe exploring the host's area a little.

If you can't be a host yourself, do you know someone else who might? Hosts can live anywhere in the UK – they don’t have to live near a university.

What a student and a host say about recent visits

  • “I enjoyed the stay very much: apart from that it also contributed to my more deep understanding of British, their lifestyle, home and specific manners .It was simply great!” Isa Khaskhanov, University of Durham, November 2012

  • “I feel that we both learnt a lot about our different cultures. I think being a host is an enriching experience because it opens your eyes to different cultures. It is rather like having a holiday but in your own house! This was my first Host experience and I rate it highly.” Rachel, London, October 2012.
