Inspiring chemist’s winning formula

06 Jul 2012

A chemist who has inspired schoolchildren has been recognised with an award from the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Lorelly Wilson at a Chemistry with Cabbage workshop

Lorelly Wilson, a Manchester graduate, set up a company, Chemistry with Cabbage, which runs workshops for schoolchildren in the North West.

Lorelly won an RSC Education Award in the Inspiration and Industry category for 'her long standing, inspirational and acclaimed lectures, and education on chemistry as both a subject and a career delivered in conjunction with industry support.'

Working with museums, universities and businesses, Chemistry with Cabbage gives children in primary schools the opportunity to do real chemistry with their own equipment for a full day and encourages them to feel that chemistry is for them.

Lorelly is an honorary fellow of the University, which has supported this initiative for many years.

Lorelly said "I am very grateful for the support of the University. We are now seeing students choosing chemistry as a result of the workshop and I can't tell you how rewarding this is."
