Research Excellence Framework 2014: Submitting individual circumstances

02 Jul 2012

Staff with individual circumstances which have affected their ability to research during the REF period may be eligible for a reduction in the number of outputs which they need to return to the REF.

The University Code of Practice for the Research Excellence Framework 2014 is now available online at:

The Code of Practice details our policy for the selection of staff for inclusion in the REF2014 submission, explaining how the University will ensure that the process is fair and supports equality and diversity. The policy was developed by the Equality and Diversity Unit, based upon guidelines from HEFCE and the Equality Challenge Unit.

Staff who have individual staff circumstances which have affected their ability to research during the REF period (e.g. part-time staff, staff who have taken maternity or paternity leave or early career researchers) may be eligible for a reduction in the number of outputs which they need to return to the REF. The University wants to gather details of all individual circumstances across the institution, so that we can ensure our process is as fair and inclusive as possible.

Full details of the REF rules, instructions on how to submit individual circumstances and the process that the University will be using to consider cases, can be found at:
