The Manchester Museum Ice Bear comes to Piccadilly Gardens on Thursday 31 March
30 Mar 2011
Ice sculptor Mark Coreth and his team of three sculptors will spend six hours carving a four metre long, 2.2 metre high, 10 tonne block of ice into the shape of a life-size polar bear.
Over the following few days the bear will melt, speeded up by the hands of the many passers by who will touch it, to show the effects of climate change and the way human activity is speeding this process up.
The Ice Bear celebrates the upcoming launch of the Museum's new Living Worlds gallery which will explore the connections between all living things, including us, and show how we can all shape the future by the choices we make. Living Worlds opens 14 April 2011.
On Friday 1 April, 2-6pm, the Ice Bear team will be running a special Ice Bear workshop in Piccadilly Gardens where you can test out your own sculpting skills (and learn a bit from the experts) by making your own clay polar bear head. Drop-in (limited places).
We would like to thank the Ice Bear Project, CityCo and The Portland by Thistle hotel for their help with the Ice Bear.
