University Language Centre named as Centre of Excellence

The University of Manchester’s Language Centre and English Language Teaching programme has been named as a Centre of Excellence by the English Language Gazette for the second year running.

The award was given to 50 centres on the recommendation of the British Council’s Accreditation UK which oversees 500 centres in Britain .

Of the 118 university language centres accredited, seven, including Manchester - were singled out as centres of excellence.

Inspectors commended the quality of the teaching, and the academic profile  of the ULC’s staff.

It also praised the ULC’s courses for being ‘well designed and structured’, having classrooms  ‘with a positive atmosphere’ and  the ‘excellent progress’ of students.

ULC staff were also praised for showing interest and concern for their students.

The Director of the ULC, Jocelyn Wyburd, said : “I’m extremely proud that our English Language Teaching quality has been recognised in this way.

“Our pre-registration and in-sessional courses are already highly valued by students and academic colleagues alike.

“It is fantastic to have this further external proof of recognition of their quality”.

She continued: “I am particularly proud of our excellent team of teachers, the high quality of our course coordinators and programme directors, and our fantastic student welfare officer.

“All should be highly congratulated”.
