Introduction to the News Media: The University of Manchester

22 Feb 2011

The University of Manchester is to co-host the Science Media Centre’s popular ‘Introduction to the News Media’ event on Wednesday, March 9, 2011, from 12.30pm to 5pm.

The event is free to attend and is aimed at scientists, engineers and clinical researchers with little or no experience of the media and how it works.

The conference normally takes place in London, so this is a great opportunity for Manchester researchers and those from other Northern institutions to hear about other scientists’ experiences of working and dealing with the media. They will be joined by a panel of science journalists and a university press officer, who will each talk about their roles and the demands and challenges they face when reporting science to the general public.

The event is not designed to be formal media training but rather a fascinating insight into how the media industry operates and how you can engage with it. This is the first time the event has been held in Northern England, so it would be good to see as many Manchester researchers there as possible. Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell will be closing the conference and then there will be a chance to discuss what you have heard with colleagues afterwards over a glass of wine.
