Academic Advisers - can you help students get graduate jobs?

11 Nov 2010

Three ways to support your students in their careers search

careers

Student attendance at some of our recent employer events has been disappointing and there is evidence that final year students, believing the gloomy media headlines about declining graduate vacancies, are simply not engaging with job hunting.

In reality, despite a competitive job market, University of Manchester students remain highly sought after by employers; the Careers Service is currently advertising over 500 job opportunities each month, with vacancy levels higher than they were in 2007.

This University is currently the most targeted university in the UK by graduate recruiters – a position we are keen to retain. We also want to boost the employability and career prospects of our students.

How can Academic Advisers help?

We recognise the valuable role Academic Advisers play in engaging with students and we would be grateful if you could help by:

  1. Encouraging students to browse the latest job vacancies by visiting careerslink. This is updated daily. Staff are welcome to set up an account so that they can also view vacancies. To set up a staff account please visit careerslink

  2. Telling students who are not sure how to start their careers search to visit our new interactive tool, Career KickStart to help them to explore a way forward.

  3. Advising students to visit the Careers Service to:

     - Get help in starting their careers search
     - Get help with CVs and applications – competition for jobs is fierce and there is lots of face-to-face and online help available.
