What's on for families in February
In this enewsletter find out about all our family events this month, our new exhibition nanoq: flat out and bluesome, a Darwin stiltwalker at Piccadilly train station, a tiger in a library, A History of the World and other events around Manchester.

Events in February
Why not pop in during half term (Monday 15-Friday 19 February, 11am-4pm) and recreate the adventures of Charles Darwin's voyage around the world.
Get comfy on our Magic Carpet and enjoy stories and activities about Darwin's animals on Friday 26 February, 11am-12pm. Book on 0161 275 2648 (from 19 Feb), £1 per child, Under 5s and their families/carers.
Or discover the wonders of the world with our Victorian Gentleman guide, Graeme Pye Esquire on Saturday 27 or Sunday 28 Feb, 2-3pm. Ask him for an 'I've spied Mr Pye' sticker. Drop-in, Free, All ages.

Exhibitions: nanoq: flat out and bluesome

The latest exhibition in The Evolutionist, our Darwin extravaganza, opens this Saturday (13 Feb). Nanoq is a photographic exhibition by artists Bryndís Snæbjörnsdóttir and Mark Wilson that uncovers the story of polar bears, and their journey from the arctic wilderness to the museums and stately homes of the UK.
Cool fact: Snæbjörnsdóttir (the surname of one of the artists) means snow bear's daughter.

News: stilt walking Darwin
On Saturday 6 February, a few of us from the Museum went down to Piccadilly Rail Station, along with a Darwin stiltwalker and Victorian lady, to let everyone know all about The Evolutionist, our Darwin extravaganza. We took some Museum objects along with us, some art and craft activities and some small fluffy tortoises. A good day was had by all!

Behind-the-scenes: Tiger in the library
Ever seen a tiger in a lift? Or a library? Well, there's a first time for everything. Take a look at our conservation blog to find out about the installation of a Darwin exhibition at North City Library in Harpurhey, featuring the Museum's Bengal tiger, some big cat skulls, a Hindu carving and art works. The exhibition has been put together by a group of young people from the Moston Steps Project, (a complimentary education service) who have been working with the Museum. The exhibition will run until Sunday 11 April 2010 at North City Library, Rochdale Road, Harpurhey, Manchester, M9 4AF.

Object of the month: Roman Altar
This Roman Altar is The Manchester Museum's chosen object for A History of the World. This partnership between the British Museum, the BBC and museums across the UK celebrates objects which have a story to tell. The Altar is one of only three altars to survive from Roman Manchester and the first inscription to be found since the 19th century.
Look out for the CBBC series Relic: Guardians of the Museum, featuring objects from the British Museum, part of A History of the World.
You can suggest your own items that have a local or global story to tell and upload images and details of the objects to the BBC website.

Imperial War Museum North
Go Large! February half term holiday activities
Imperial War Museum North are launching a brand new series of events this half term focusing on their large objects. Pick up a special gallery pack, themed to a large object such as the First World War Artillery Piece gallery pack which includes smells from the trenches and a periscope; Go Creative in their craft sessions; hear fascinating stories at a Go Large What A Performance session or take part in a Go Large TimeStack Handling sessions.
