On Saturday 14 November, The University of Manchester SPORT department launched the South Manchester parkrun. The event saw staff, students and the local community taking part in a 5k run around Platt Fields Park.

SPORT Volunteers from the University Sport Volunteer Scheme and running enthusiasts in the local community participated in and helped to run, the event. Gail Heathcoate-Milner, sport development officer for health and fitness said, “The run was a great way to engage students and the local community in free exercise. The event was a great success with over 100 runners attending. Without the volunteers we could not hold the event and they have been very committed to ensuring that the run will carry on week after week.”

On the day the record was set by Laurie Luscombe who ran 17:26. The female equivalent is held by Helen Ailsa Clarke who ran the course in 22:26.

The South Manchester parkrun is held every Saturday at 9am and starts at the Lakeside Centre, Platt Fields Park. The event is free and attracts a wide range of abilities, all of which are catered for.
