Update to Regulation XVII (Conduct & Discipline of Students).

11 Nov 2008

Regulation XVII has been revised with immediate effect.

Regulation XVII, Conduct and Discipline of Students, has been revised with immediate effect.

The current version is dated October 2008 and is available online at:

The changes made are not substantive – i.e. they do not give the University any new powers. In summary, the key changes are:

  • Halls of Residence: with respect to appeals against disciplinary action taken in Halls of Residence, the composition of the review panel has been changed to reflect the new structure in the Directorate of Sport, Trading and Residential Services. Appeals against disciplinary decisions taken in Halls of Residence will be reviewed by a panel consisting of: General Manager for Pastoral Care, a Warden and a nominee of the Head of Student Support and Services.

  • Complaints of Misconduct in Research: when such complaints are made against Research Students they are handled according to the Code of Practice for Handling Complaints of Misconduct in Research. This is now made explicit in Regulation XVII. The Student Discipline Committee of Senate continues to be responsible for determining penalties.

  • Faculty Powers: there has been a redistribution of powers to impose penalties from Student Discipline Committee to Faculties with the result that Faculties now have the power to impose penalties 7(e) and 7(f).
