How do you value and support public engagement?

15 May 2008

Help Beacons initiative by completing e-survey by 23 May.

The Initiative

The Beacons for Public Engagement (BPE) initiative was launched by the UK Higher Education Funding Councils, Research Councils UK and the Wellcome Trust in January of this year. The initiative aims to encourage a change in culture within Higher Education with regard to engaging with the public and to support the development of public engagement across all subject areas and activities. It will do so by building on and refining existing work, and through the development of new practice.

The Beacons for Public Engagement are based around the following universities:

  • Cardiff and Glamorgan
  • UCL and Birkbeck
  • East Anglia
  • Manchester, Salford and Manchester Metropolitan
  • Newcastle and Durham
  • Edinburgh

There is also a National Coordinating Centre involving the universities of Bristol and UWE.

The Evaluation

Oakleigh Consulting Limited are evaluating the Beacons for Public Engagement (BPE) initiative on behalf of the funders. This e-survey forms part of their baseline assessment for the evaluation. They are interested in the views of staff in both BPE and non-BPE institutions because they want to see what is happening across the sector, and wish to invite staff at The University of Manchester to complete the survey.

Completing the questionnaire

The questionnaire is composed of a series of open and closed questions and should take no more than 10-15 minutes to complete.

Please complete it by 23 May 2008.
