Remembering Luke O'Connor, and further support information

28 Oct 2022

We understand that the recent tragic events in Fallowfield will be impacting the wider university community across Manchester and we send our heartfelt condolences to Luke O’Connor’s family and friends, and our wider colleagues at Manchester Metropolitan University

Remembering Luke

Holy Innocents Church has organised a vigil taking place this afternoon, Friday 28 October 3-5pm, offering space, quiet and prayers to remember Luke and take a moment of reflection. Anyone may join at any time between 3-5pm and spend as much time as they choose.

St Peter’s House Chaplaincy are also inviting anyone to come along and light a candle of remembrance, in their chapel.

Wellbeing support available

This is an extremely sad time, and our students and staff may need to grieve or process the situation.

Our Counselling and Mental Health Services can provide immediate support in a crisis alongside one-to-one appointments, online resources and workshops. Our Residential Life teams remain available 24/7 for students in our halls of residence. Further support resources for staff are also available.

Extra safety measures in place

You may be feeling worried or anxious about your safety in Manchester, and specifically Fallowfield, following this week’s events. Greater Manchester Police are providing additional safety patrols between 7pm and 3am every evening in Fallowfield and popular student areas, up until Monday 31 October, to bring you extra peace of mind. The Police also have ‘stop and search’ powers in operation in the area until 7pm today, Friday 28 October.

Our mobile app SafeZone can also be used to quickly connect you with our Campus Support and Security team if you have an immediate concern or require first aid or wellbeing assistance. The app is free to download, easy to use, and operates across not just our campus and accommodation areas, but also MMU and Salford campuses.
