Microsoft 365 licensing issue - resolved

16 Sep 2022

IT Services were unable to assign new Microsoft 365 (M365) licences to a number of staff and student IT accounts. This was due to increased scrutiny from Microsoft during our normal licence renewal process.

Latest update: Friday 16 September

We continue to work with Microsoft to fully resolve the licensing issues, however we believe we have now issued M365 licences to all staff and students who were waiting for them. If you can't access M365 services and you think you should be able to, please contact the IT Support Centre to log a ticket.

Update: Tuesday 13 September, 10.30am

The licensing issue for students is now resolved with Microsoft and we are in the process of assigning M365 licences to students awaiting one. Once an account has been allocated a M365 licence the student will be able to login to M365 services (University email, Microsoft Teams, other Office 365 applications) shortly after.

We are still unable to issue new M365 licences for staff, however it is hoped this will also be resolved later today.

We’ll share the next update when we have it.

Original message

If you’re affected you won’t be able to access University email via Outlook, use Microsoft Teams, or other Office 365 applications. This is mostly impacting new students but also a small number of staff.

Those whose accounts are affected will not be receivng any emails, and will be returning 'undeliverable' messages. If there have been any central or school communications sent to these accounts as part of regular onboarding and Start of Year processes, those emails will not be in inboxes once their licenses are assigned to them.

Access to Blackboard and My Manchester is unaffected.

We are continuing to work with Microsoft to urgently complete our renewal, at which point we will be able to assign licences again. We are hopeful this will be in the next few days.

Affected staff and students do not need to do anything – licences will be assigned as quickly as possible once Microsoft has completed its review.

We will post any updates here as we have them.
