Bee Active and get moving with Transport for Greater Manchester

20 Apr 2022

As the weather starts improving, and as part of a new ‘Bee Active’ active travel campaign, Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) are encouraging people to get out cycling, walking, and wheeling this spring

Bee Active TfGM

Choosing to cycle, walk, or wheel can help reduce carbon emissions, protect the environment, help fight climate change, reduce traffic congestion, and improve air quality, as well as helping to improve your physical and mental health.

You can find lots of advice and information available at their dedicated active travel website and their interactive map shows key points of interest and highlights how far you can get from your home in just 15 minutes when cycling, walking, or wheeling.

GM Cycle Hire - 100,000km ridden

Greater Manchester’s new cycle hire scheme launched to the public in November 2021 and bikes are currently available from stations along the Oxford Road corridor, the University of Salford, and Media City. The full scheme is due to launch later this year with 1,500 bikes, including 300 e-bikes, becoming available from stations across Manchester, Salford and Trafford.

  • So far the scheme has seen over 100,000km collectively ridden, with over 39,000 journeys taken, and over 10,400 active users.

Cycle training and maintenance courses

If you need a bit of help getting on your bike this spring, Transport for Greater Manchester also offer a wide range of cycle skills courses including one-to-one sessions, cycle maintenance courses and even family confidence training, which provides guidance on how to safely cycle as a group on the road, giving families the chance to get out together this spring.

  • More dates for group courses to be added soon

Cycle and Stride

Cycle and Stride for Active Lives is an initiative from TfGM that supports community groups and people in Greater Manchester to become more active through walking and cycling and seeks to reach 10,000 people across communities that are least likely to be active or to walk or cycle their journeys.

GM Walking Festival

The GM Walking Festival is coming up in May as part of National Walking Month. After a few years away due to COVID-19, GM Walking Festival is delighted to once again be able to bring together a range of walks and activities organised by local communities and groups. Be part of GM Walking Festival this May to discover new places, improve your mental wellbeing, and get moving more!
