Spotlight on….The Climate Network

02 Nov 2020

Get involved

The UoM Climate Network is a friendly grouping of staff and students who are passionate about limiting (and potentially even reversing) the damaging effects of man-made climate change, both in a local and global sense.  Our goal is to inspire awareness of this topic and to help create an inclusive discourse around existing work occurring across both the University and the surrounding Greater Manchester region.  We would also like to highlight and discuss the concerns of students; supporting them in their aspirations relating to climate change awareness and actions.

Our network hosts a weekly Thursday lunchtime seminar series at which guest speakers discuss a variety of topics related to climate change and sustainability, for example, previous talks have focussed upon: Sustainable Fashion, Eco-Anxiety, Food Waste, and Effective Climate Change Communication.

These seminars and any other relevant climate change events are advertised in our weekly newsletter to our Listserv subscribers.

In terms of social media, Yammer is used for the network to share updates/ideas, whereas the Facebook page allows for the external promotion of events.

We have recently been welcomed into the UoM staff networks group, which will provide us with greater exposure and support for our future endeavours. We have also been busy making new contacts both internal and external to UoM, including:

Education Officer (Students’ Union), Environmental Sustainability Team, People & Planet, UMBUG, UCU Environment Working Group, Manchester Fashion Movement and Stitched Up, Climate Psychology Alliance, HOME, Take a Bite Out of Climate Change, Kindling Trust, Manchester Museum, Greenpeace, Climate Emergency Manchester, and Manchester Environmental Education Network.
