New Institute for Teaching and Learning

18 Sep 2019

The new University of Manchester Institute for Teaching and Learning (UMITL) will launch on Tuesday, 1 October under the strategic leadership of the Vice-President for Teaching, Learning and Students

Professor Judith Williams

Professor Judith Williams, currently Deputy Associate Dean for Staff Development in the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health, has been appointed UMITL Director.

The new Institute will support the University’s strategic aim to deliver teaching excellence by working closely with the emerging Faculty Teaching and Learning Academies, building on and sharing existing best practice. As part of this, UMITL will also be the home for new cross-University academic development and recognition programmes, building on the success of the Leadership in Education Awards Programme.

UMITL will be located in the Directorate for Student Experience, alongside University of Manchester Worldwide and the University College for Interdisciplinary Learning, and will be a physical hub with the capacity to host training, development and networking activities.

Professor Williams said: “I’m very much looking forward to establishing UMITL as a transformative institute that will develop, support and embed excellence for teaching quality.

The new Institute will engage with colleagues to drive forward a step-change in teaching quality and consistency across the University and in turn deliver the best possible experience for our students.”

Professor Agnew (Vice President for Teaching Learning and Students) said: “UMITL will be instrumental in helping us to achieve our vision making the University a place where people are proud to teach, where teaching is considered a prestige activity, and where our students are continually challenged to develop themselves as individuals through transformative learning experiences.

“Please join me in congratulating Judy on her appointment. I look forward to working closely with her over the coming weeks and months to develop and embed an exciting programme of teaching and learning activities across the University.”
