A big thank you to colleagues for transforming the Goods Receiving Stores into Aladdin’s Cave – and struggling families’ festive celebrations
Wood Street Mission Christmas Appeal 2017 has thanked colleagues from across the University for their generous donations of gifts and food for local families.
Organiser Muriel Shingler said: “This year the number of donations made by members of staff across the University in response to the publicity about this year’s appeal has been amazing.
“Having spoken to the Goods Receiving Manager in the Sackville Street Building and seeing for myself the number and the type of donations made this year, there has been a definite increase on last year’s donations.
“The University van was picking up donations all day, up to and including the closing date of Friday, 8 December.”
Co-organiser Rose Underwood added: “There were numerous large and small boxes and lots of bulging large carrier bags and black plastic bags as well as a large range of food.
“This year also saw an increase in the number and variety of toiletries donated for the older children as well as reading books and all kinds of writing materials and enough toys to fill a toy shop!”
Muriel agreed: “All in all, the Goods Receiving Stores was like an Aladdin’s Cave and we can honestly say that this year was hugely successful.
“This success would not of course have happened without the help of the members of staff in Goods Receiving Stores Sackville Street Building and the Post Room staff in the John Owens Building Oxford Road and, of course, not forgetting those members of University staff without whose generosity this appeal would not have been successful as it was.
“Thank you, everyone!”
Wood Street Mission helps children and families who are affected by poverty in Manchester and Salford with everyday items most of us take for granted and through practical help. Its Christmas appeal provides children up to the age of 14 with new toys and gifts and families with food.
