The Works receives national recognition

University shortlisted in the Guardian University Awards
The University’s approach to social responsibility has once again received national recognition. 'The Works’, our signature initiative to support employability and skills in our most local communities, has been shortlisted for a Guardian University Award in the social and community impact category .
Delivered in partnership with the Manchester Growth Company, as an employer-led initiative The Works is unique both in British higher education and other employment sectors in our region. The University has taken a lead role in creating a partnership of local employers to tackle unemployment by developing skills and ring-fencing jobs for local unemployed people.
Led by the University's Assistant Director of Human Resources Steve Grant, The Works provides local residents with privileged access to training, advice and job opportunities, both at the University and with a host of other partner employers. It has established a physical centre in our neighbouring district of Moss Side.
Up to 2014/15 The Works has supported 2,390 people into work, 97% of whom were unemployed at the time. Independent economic analysis has calculated that it’s brought £38 million of savings to the local economy through the reduced costs to society of unemployment.
Steve Grant, Assistant Director of Human Resources, said: “I’m delighted that The Works has again been recognised nationally for its unique place in British higher education and its life-changing impact on individuals and local communities.”
The winner will be announced at an Awards ceremony on Wednesday, 16 March.
