Workshop to discuss research at £235 million Sir Henry Royce Institute for Advanced Materials
A workshop aimed at shaping the £235 million Sir Henry Royce Institute for Advanced Materials, confirmed in Chancellor George Osborne's recent Spending Review and Autumn Statement as a national facility, will take place in Manchester.
The event - held at the Schuster Building on Friday, 8 January 2016 - will gather industrialists, research organisations and academics to discuss the long-term opportunities and challenges for developing Advanced Materials to underpin UK competitiveness.
The workshop will feature break-out sessions looking at the main areas of the Institute’s research:
- Energy Storage
- Energy Efficient Materials for ICT
- Biomedical Materials Devices
- 2D Nanomaterials & Devices & Nanofabrication
- Advanced Metals Processing and Materials for Demanding Environments
- Nuclear materials
- Chemical Materials Design
The event will close with a summary of the next steps in developing the research and commercialisation strategy of the Institute.
The Sir Henry Royce Institute will have its hub at the University and spokes at the founding partners, comprising the universities of Sheffield, Leeds, Liverpool, Cambridge, Oxford and Imperial College London, National Nuclear Labs, and Culham Centre for Fusion Energy.
The Institute will allow the UK to grow its world-leading research and innovation base in advanced-materials science, which is fundamental to all industrial sectors and the national economy.
It is also seen as a crucial element of the Government’s Northern Powerhouse initiative, an attempt to boost economic growth in the North of England and balance the UK economy.
The workshop will be held 11am-4pm.
