Invitation to the inaugural Pankhurst lecture delivered by Shami Chakrabarti

Shami Chakrabarti, Director of Liberty (The National Council for Civil Liberties) and Honorary Professor in the School of Law, will deliver the inaugural Pankhurst Lecture on 26 February 2015. The opening address will be provided by Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell, President and Vice-Chancellor.
The School of Law has founded the Pankhurst lecture to commemorate its alumna Christabel Pankhurst and to highlight the role of women and the law. Christabel Pankhurst was a suffragette and leading figure in the Women's Social and Political Union. She obtained a First Class degree from The University of Manchester, but, as a woman, was unable to practice as a barrister. Instead she used her legal knowledge to highlight gender inequality in speeches and pamphlets.
The situation in this country for women has improved immeasurably over the last 100 years but women are still under-represented as law makers, in the police, prison service and in the higher ranks of the legal profession. Crimes against women are not always addressed with sufficient seriousness and there are problems with how the criminal justice system treats female offenders. The situation is much worse in other countries and our inaugural lecturer, Shami Chakrabarti, has described gender inequality as the leading human rights issue today.
The lecture is open to everyone and a drinks reception will take place afterwards. Places are limited so booking is required.
