I help young women diagnosed with breast cancer

Making a difference

For the last 8 years I have been involved in a support group for young women with breast cancer in the Warrington/Widnes area. ‘Sarah’s Stars’ are a group of younger women, most of whom have been diagnoised with breast cancer under the age of 40.

We offer emotional, informative and practical support to younger women (and their families and friends) who have been affected by their diagnosis. Younger women have specific needs and concerns, and because of their relative low numbers, often feel isolated after their diagnosis. Breast cancer has an impact on women, whatever their age. The choices and treatments, may however, differ in a younger age group and the group members will often have similar decisions / dilemmas and can share their experiences.

I have helped raise funds for the group (through various events, from charity balls to raffles) and more recently have been joint treasurer. I participated in our 2011 fashion show (ladies from the group being models to show we can still look glamorous following treatment, even if we were terrified!) and have met and made some wonderful friends over the years through the group.

What could be better than mutual understanding, help and support?
