Vice-President meets African leaders

Professor Luke Georghiou, the University’s Vice-President for Research and Innovation, met with several African leaders during a recent visit to Tanzania.

Prof Georghiou was speaking at the Global 2013 Smart Partnership Dialogue on Technology for Development, organised by the Commonwealth Partnership for Technology Management. The event was held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s largest city.

Prof Georghiou met with President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete of Tanzania, President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, Prime Minister of Malaysia  Dato Sri Mohd Najib Tun Razak, King Mswati III of Swaziland and former President Joaquim Chissano of Mozambique.

He spoke about innovation procurement, University reach equipment and innovation ecosystems. The conference also had a presentation on graphene by Ivan Buckley, Project Manager for the National Graphene Institute.

Prof Georghiou is responsible for the University’s research strategy and its implementation and for business engagement and commercialisation activities. He continues to be active in research and policy advice to governments and business.

He is on the editorial board of eight journals and has published extensively in leading outlets including Science and Nature.
