Developing people
One of a manager’s key responsibilities is supporting staff to develop the skills and behaviours needed to succeed and contribute to the University’s goals. Developing others means prioritising growth, using coaching and mentoring to help individuals reach their potential. It includes giving regular, constructive feedback and actively supporting staff wellbeing. This section provides resources to help you empower your team and encourage ownership of their learning.
- Library PDR guidance - Performance and Development Reviews (PDRs) help managers support staff in achieving their professional goals and maximizing performance. Library managers should conduct annual PDRs and regularly review objectives and development goals.
- Library Staff Learning and Development pages - ensure your staff are aware of the learning and development areas offered via the Library, including Essential training, Digital skills and resources to develop skills, support career progression, and help align development with strategic priorities.
- Conference attendance and Sustained Study - Conference attendance and study opportunities enhance staff development by expanding knowledge, skills, and networks, leading to improved performance, career growth, and organizational effectiveness. - Secondments - A secondment is a temporary move to a different role or area within the Library, University, or beyond. It offers staff the chance to build new skills, broaden experience, and prepare for future roles - supporting both personal development and succession planning.
- Coaching and Mentoring - employing coaching and mentoring techniques will enable you to get the best performance from individuals and to help others develop.
