MECD will be the single largest home for engineering in any UK university. Although vast in scale, creating collaborations and a connected community has been at centre of its vision and design.

The spaces and the facilities within MECD will deliver a vibrant and truly inspiring environment for teaching, learning and research.

Collaboration and community are central to MECD’s vision. The internal space has been designed to create a sense of community and belonging for staff, PGR Students, UG and PGT students and visitors, while also promoting collaboration between them.

The design has minimised physical barriers allowing freedom of movement and open sight lines between areas and activities and show cases our engineering and material science activities.

The campus will provide a mix of spaces that increase the opportunities for staff and students to meet – planned and by chance, formal and collaborative, public and private – giving somewhere for everyone to feel at home, and encouraging retention of our students on campus outside of core teaching and working hours.

Our community will also have access to a range of spaces designed to meet their various needs at different points in their study or working day from busy, social spaces to quiet reflective, private study and meeting places.
