Why learning and development matters
Our aim is to ensure equitable access to learning and development through a clear, consistent, and transparent approach. By reviewing over 400 anonymised PDR learning objectives from the 2023/24 cycle, we identified shared priorities and learning needs across the Library. We used this feedback—alongside a Library-wide review of learning activity to shape the resource and align it with the University’s broader development offer, ensuring we provide targeted support and opportunities at all levels.
Our Approach: the 70:20:10 Learning Model
We’ve based our plan on the 70:20:10 learning model, a well-established framework for effective learning:
- 70% Experiential Learning – through on-the-job tasks, projects, and opportunities.
- 20% Social Learning – through mentoring, coaching, feedback, and collaboration.
- 10% Formal Learning – through courses, webinars, and workshops,
Most learning happens through real work. Managers and team leaders play a key role in enabling this: by encouraging hands-on learning, supporting knowledge sharing, and helping staff explore development opportunities beyond the training room.
