Important Main Library Works Update
09 Jun 2025
As part of our Main Library Redefined project, Estates and Facilities are leading two important works over the summer to refurbish the Library Lounge and toilets in the Blue Area (from Blue Basement to Blue 4).

Please note that Main Library will be closed from 30 June to the beginning of the academic year.
Public information with alternative service provisions has been updated.
Please see the changes and alternative measures in place for Library staff.
General operations and deliveries
- Entering the building: Library staff can access Main Library throughout the closure. Access to the building will be via swipe card access through the right-side door of the main entrance. If you do not have access via this door, please contact access control.
- Access around Main Library: Please refer to the diversions document. Please note this is a working document and will be regularly updated
- Customer access: Any essential customer access will be by exception only and on an appointment basis. Please note that any non-Library staff will have no toilet provision during their visit and must always be accompanied by Library staff.
- Stock retrieval: This service will be in place as we are offering a Click-and-Collect service during the closure period.
- Vendor or supplier access: Arrangements will need to be put in place by the member of Library staff who is meeting with them.
- Blue Staff Lift will remain open and be available for student use.
- Library Lounge will close from 9 June; AGLC café remains open except 17–27 June.

Staff workspaces
All staff spaces remain available in Main Library. Please use alternative spaces (including student spaces) if areas are too noisy or disruptive during Main Library closure.
Red 2.6 has been block booked for CSD teams who currently work on Blue 1 and may be affected by noise from 2 June to 26 September.
Library Staff have access to Crawford House as usual. Other spaces on campus include a drop-in space for staff in Coupland 3 Basement LG – 120, and there are rooms in John Owens and Whitworth buildings that can be booked using ResourceBooker.
Using the Crawford Collaboration Space: please be mindful when booking the Collaboration Space for long periods of time during Main Library closure. Library Leadership Team will provide further guidance via DMTs.
Staff Room (Blue Ground)
Due to Health & Safety requirements, the ML staffroom will be closed from Monday, 9 June until the end of August. Alternative staff spaces and facilities are available in the Main Library and other campus buildings. Please refer to the diversions document. Please note this is a working document and will be regularly updated
- Laptop loans: From Monday, 9 June there will be no access to the laptop loans in the Main Library staff room whilst the building work is going on in Muriel Stott.
- Laptops will be available from Red 2.2. Library staff will still be able to borrow them using a sign in and out system from this office.
PEEPs (Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan)
Managers should contact their teams to review any PEEPs that might be in place.
Risk Assessment for use of Main Library during closure
A general risk assessment has been completed for all Library staff planning to work in Main Library during the period of construction works during June-September 2025.
If you are making changes to a service you run from Main Library, you may need to complete a risk assessment specific to that service. Advice and support is available – please contact Finn Hobin in the first instance.
