What's changing?

Specific spaces in Main Library are changing. Below you will find more detail on the proposed plans and work that will be required.

Library Lounge refresh

The new Library Lounge has been co-designed with the Students' Union. Changes include improvements to the lighting and windows, improved facilities in the Cosy Campus space and higher quality furniture that's more suited to eating and relaxing.

Blue area toilets redevelopment

Plans include refurbishments to all single sex male and female toilets in Blue area (all floors, basement to fourth floor. Six all-gender toilets, 14 female toilets and two accessible toilets will also be created.

Muriel Stott Centre and courtyard

A Library instigated project to redevelop these spaces based on student feedback and usage information, collaborating with colleagues from the Directorate of Estates and Facilities. The project aims to deliver benefits to all our Library users, meeting intersectional needs across different user groups through additional and enhanced provision in the form of:

  • An improved reading room that is in keeping with the aesthetic of the building, including a good standard of flooring, redecoration, heating, and lighting, with sufficient power and IT provision to be provided throughout.
  • 36 Bookable individual silent study spaces
  • Outdoor all-weather study spaces bringing nature and greenery, plus additional informal seating for relaxation.
  • A calm indoor study space to support neurodivergent Library users
  • New windows to improve air quality and reduce CO2 emissions.
