AMBS Research Office

AMBS Research Office provides assistance to academic colleagues in preparing funding applications and managing new awards. This is delivered via a team made up of a Research Support Manager, Knowledge and Impact Exchange Officer, Grant Writer, Financial Support Officer and Research Support Officers. The Team’s remit includes:

  • Understanding and explaining funder requirements
  • Preparing budgets and assisting with grant writing (upscaling ideas, developing

project proposals, proofreading)

  • Developing Pathways to Impact plans
  • Supporting internal peer review processes
  • Formally submitting and accepting awards on behalf of the University
  • Co-ordinating approvals for new research staff appointments and contracts
  • Providing management information on applications and awards (including financial management and reporting)

As well as offering support for external funding applications, the Research Team are also the point of contact for internal funding streams, such as the AMBS Research Support Fund, which is seed funding for larger external applications.   The main contacts are:

Research Support Managers are located in the School and provide strategic support to the Head of School and Director of Research. They should be contacted for queries relating to the Research Excellence Framework, Research Committees and for strategic and policy development support. The Research Support Manager has overall responsibility for the life cycle of any project, from pre-award through to post-award.

Research Facilitators (Strategic Funding) provide professional support for composing high-quality external funding applications across the school.

Knowledge Exchange & Impact Officers provide guidance and support on knowledge exchange activities across the School.

Research Support Officers provide core research support across the whole lifecycle of projects as named contacts, liaising with funders, preparing costings, coordinating recruitment and contracts.

Research Finance Officers are responsible for guidance on the full economic and recoverable costs for the project and will liaise with external organisations to ensure timely financial information.

 

Support for New Applications

If you wish to submit a new application or receive advice for preparing an application, including EU, please email research.services@manchester.ac.uk. Your query will be received by your Research Support Manager (Kellie Gallagher) who will assign this to a member of the team who will become your named contact. If your award is successful your named contact will continue to provide support, liaising with funders, staff recruitment and contracts.

Support for Current Projects

Queries about existing projects can be sent to research.services@manchester.ac.uk or your named contact. A named contact will be assigned to each existing project, and financial support will be provided by Gemma Deacon.

The School follows University requirements in relation to research ethics for staff and student projects. Extensive and up-to-date information is available on the University ethics webpages. The current AMBS ethics chairs are Nadia Papamichail (PGT research) and Julie Froud (staff and PGR research).
