AMBS Research Centres and Institutes

Alliance MBS is home to four globally recognised Institutes and has a large number of centres which, as well as spanning a huge array of subject areas, also bring together academics from many different disciplines and fields in the true spirit of interdisciplinary research. Our centres combine theoretical rigor with practical policy relevance, resulting in research that is relevant to academics, students and practitioners.

AMBS Research Institutes

Sustainable Consumption Institute

Our research challenges orthodox thinking on sustainable consumption and production.

Our four research themes explore how reconfiguring consumption and production systems can contribute to less resource-intensive ways of life.  Placing consumption in the foreground of our research allows us to better understand human needs, values, practices and habits, informing the drive to create more sustainable societies. However, this focus is balanced with questions surrounding the production, supply and distribution of goods and services - these factors shape how people live their everyday lives, and are in turn shaped by consumption.

Work and Equalities Institute

The agenda of the Work and Equalities Institute is to identify and promote the conditions for more inclusive and fair work and employment arrangements. Our research will be used in knowledge exchange, dialogue and debate with key stakeholders and policymakers, and to make informed contributions to policy formation and the development of practice. To achieve this, the Institute will draw on advice from an advisory board of policymakers and practitioners with local, national and international expertise.

Manchester Institute of Innovation Research

We are a world-leading centre of excellence in the study of science, technology and innovation policy and management. Our research, teaching and engagement activities build on many years of expertise, based upon a guiding principle of excellence, both in terms of academic rigour and societal relevance. The Productivity Institute, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), brings together world-leading experts from a range of disciplines and backgrounds, working directly with policymakers and businesses to better understand, measure, and enable improvements in productivity across the whole of the UK, with the aim to improve living standard and well-being.

AMBS Research Centres

Centre for the Analysis of Investment Risk (A&F)

The Centre for the Analysis of Investment Risk (CAIR) provides research expertise on wide-ranging aspects of investment decision-making and the governance of the ambiguities, risk, and uncertainty faced when making decisions. Their interdisciplinary research concerns the assessment, communication, auditing, and assurance of investment decisions and their returns, productivity, and social and environmental impact.

Decision and Cognitive Sciences Research Centre (MSM)

The Decision and Cognitive Science Research Centre undertakes research in the areas of Multiple Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) and Decision Support Systems (DSS). It is home to one of the largest groupings of researchers in both areas. The Centre promotes cross-disciplinary research within decision sciences and cognitive sciences; and applies and evaluates its research findings on real-world decision problems in all sectors.

Centre for Financial Technology (FinTech) Studies

A research hub for digital advancements in finance. It also acts as a knowledge-sharing platform for firms and financial services institutions, and collaborates with industry partners.

Masood Entrepreneurship Centre

The Masood Entrepreneurship Centre (MEC) is one of the UK leaders in the area of practitioner-based, applied enterprise and entrepreneurship education.  Based within the IMP Division of the Alliance Manchester Business School, the Centre’s activities are available to all Schools and Faculties of the University and for all students, graduates and staff.

MEC contributes to the impact that a University of Manchester education has in developing the capabilities of students to utilise and apply their knowledge. Around 25 per cent of the total student body (around 10,000 students) engages with enterprise and entrepreneurship – electing taught units, participating in co-curricular activities and involvement with student societies.

With funding from the Masood family, a specially designed suite is located on the second floor of AMBS, which includes staff offices, an enterprise zone and accelerator space.
