Research Development

The Research Office offers a range of resources to help you develop your funding application.

In particular, the School’s Research Facilitator is available to work with you to upscale your idea into a high-quality application. This includes:

  • Helping to find the most appropriate source of funding
  • Advice to develop an idea ahead of an application
  • Assistance during the grant writing process

The Research Facilitator can also provide support with liaising with rest of research support team for budgeting and sign-off, and providing partners with guidance and templates for supporting documentation.

As well as dedicated grant support, the Research and Impact Facilitators also organise face-to-face and online training sessions throughout the year. These will be advertised through the Research Office bulletin.

Information on some of the main sources of external funding can be found below. However, with increasingly tight deadlines for many funding calls, it is never too early to tell us about a project idea (even if you are not yet sure of a suitable funder etc.).

Other External Funding

There is a wide range of external funding available which links into the research carried out by AMBS staff.

This includes calls which are open all year round from UK funders such as the ESRC and the Leverhulme Trust, as well as ad hoc calls made throughout the year by the funding councils, as well as from charities and government agencies.

A full list of all Horizon Europe calls can be found on the European Commission website.

Internal Funding

Internal funding – from pump priming funds for new project ideas, to support for visiting fellowships and impact activities – is available from various sources across the University throughout the year. These opportunities are advertised in the Research Office’s monthly bulletin.
Further information about the internal funding schemes available can be found on the Faculty of Humanities' Research Funding pages.

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships

The Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) scheme is a programme which supports business innovation. KTP projects provide structure and funding support to help businesses undertake open innovation and scale up through collaboration with world-leading academic experts from the University of Manchester.

KTPs at Manchester have a two-stage application process – you can submit an expression of interest throughout the year. There are then several fixed deadlines for the submission of full applications. For further information please see the KTP webpage.

If you are interested in applying for a KTP, please get in touch with the Research Office who will liaise with the Business Engagement Team to support your application.

Global Challenges Research Fund and the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund

The Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) is a £1.5 billion fund announced by the UK Government to support cutting-edge research that addresses the challenges faced by developing countries. Both UKRI and the British Academy are delivery partners for the GCRF and so many of their funding calls are structured around this.

The Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund brings together leading research organisations and business to tackle the big societal and industrial challenges today. It is structured around a number of themes, which include Audience of the Future, Creative Industries Clusters, Healthy Ageing and Next Generation Services. A full list of the themes covered by the fund can be found on the UKRI website.

Calls for both of these funds are issued throughout the year, often with very short notice. Therefore, if you have a project idea which fits with the broad aims of either of these funds please contact the Research Office who will be able to help you tailor your idea to upcoming calls. The current open calls relevant to AMBS can be found in the latest funding opportunities bulletin.
