Karen Wang

Winner – Supporter of the Year

Karen Wang

This award recognises a person or team from outside the DSE who has helped us achieve our own objectives and who we want to thank for being particularly supportive.

Karen is the Deputy Director of The Confucius Institute which is dedicated to the development of language and cultural understanding of China both within the University and across the region. Although Karen is already very busy overseeing the institute’s language classes, cultural exchange events and outreach with local schools, she also provides unstinting support to the services delivered by the Campus Life division of the DSE.

Colleagues in Advice & Response and in Counselling and Mental Health services report that Karen is often called upon for translation or interpreting services at short notice to help students going through a crisis. The issues can be complex and emotionally demanding, but Karen’s involvement has often been crucial in supporting students, especially when also liaising with their families and services outside the University at a difficult time.

Her DSE colleagues know that they can rely on Karen, not just to interpret, but to provide culturally knowledgeable and sensitive support. She was nominated by several service managers for her unfailing patience and empathy, and for being a true ‘team player’ well beyond her own job role.

How do you feel about winning a DOCA?

I was surprised to be nominated, let alone winning the Supporter of the Year award!

What did you enjoy about the ceremony?

It was so well organised and felt like an ‘Oscars’ event! As a non-DSE staff member, I had the chance to see the range of services within DSE and meet colleagues, especially some familiar faces.

What is enjoyable or meaningful for you about being part of the Directorate for the Student Experience?

Although I am not part of the DSE, I feel I was very welcomed at the event and working with DSE colleagues is always a pleasure. The communication from the Director’s Office has been excellent.
