Start of Year 2025

The Start of Year Hub is a central repository of information to make sure you have all the key information in one accessible place. Here you will find all the latest updates about our key operational areas, change projects and student activity, as well relevant contact information for you to escalate an issue if needed.

Latest updates

2 September, 2pm

Some home students have applied to Student Finance for tuition fee loans at last year’s amount (£9,250) instead of this year’s (£9,535), creating a £285 shortfall. Guidance has been published below under ‘What’s changed this year?’.

1 September 2025, 9am

  • The Right to Study check has been postponed until 8 September while testing and defect fixes are completed.
  • A banner has been added in My Manchester to inform students that the process will launch on 8 September.
  • There is no impact on pre-sessional students, as their studies conclude in the week commencing 8 September.
  • Most international students on visas are not expected to arrive until 15 September; a significant number of CAS applications remain in progress, indicating many students are still completing visa arrangements.
  • We are working with IT Services on testing and defect fixing and discussing contingencies should there be any further delays.

What's changing this year?

Canvas

Canvas is here

  • Canvas is now our central learning environment replacing Blackboard across the university.
  • Courses being taught from the start of the academic year should be built and published in Canvas by the Unit Lead responsible for delivering the course by Monday 8 September.
  • Blackboard will be switched off on Friday 17 October and will no longer be available to colleagues and students. Make sure all training and assessment activity is completed in Blackboard before this date to avoid losing any work.
  • If you have teaching activity expected to continue in Blackboard past this date, you should contact your local eLearning team as soon as possible.

Student right to study check

What is it?

Students who need a visa to study at Manchester must complete this check which will be available from 8 September.  The student is required to provide a set of information (Share code) and documents to evidence that they have valid immigration permission to study in the UK on the specified course.

Why?

This is part of immigration compliance.  There has been a review of immigration compliance from applicant to student.  The process has been updated to better identify students who need immigration permission.

Who needs to undertake it?

All students who need to provide evidence of immigration permission to study.

How is it done?

  • Students are invited to complete the check in My Manchester.
  • They provide their share code and upload documents (passport, boarding pass, etc).
  • The Student Immigration Team verifies the documents.
  • Students are notified of the outcome by email.

SEAtS

Please continue to use the Student Engagement and Attendance System this academic year. SEAtS allows teaching colleagues to log their student’s attendance at scheduled on-campus teaching activities.

Live codes

Please prioritise the sharing of live codes in SEAtS wherever possible, to improve attendance accuracy. To support this, the system will now default to show you the live code first. You will have to select ‘static’ from the drop down to get the static code. Live codes refresh every 30 seconds and reduce the chance of students sharing codes with those not attending.

Lunch and Learn sessions

You can sign up to one of several Teams sessions to refresh yourself on using SEAtS. Visit the SEAtS SharePoint site, select your chosen date and ‘add to my calendar’.

Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs)

Academics with access should share codes with new GTAs who teach, whenever this is required. Once a GTA is fully onboarded and has a staff email address they can complete this form to get their own access.

Support & Resources

Please support new colleagues who are joining the University and may be unfamiliar with SEAtS. You can also encourage them to attend a Lunch and Learn session.

Increase home student tuition fees

The UK Government has increased the tuition fee cap for home students from £9,250 to £9,535 for this academic year. Our tuition fees have risen in line with this change.

We are aware that some students have applied to Student Finance for the previous loan amount (£9,250). This creates a shortfall of £285.

Students affected can still complete registration, but they must update their Student Finance application to the correct loan amount. If they do not, they will be personally responsible for paying the £285 difference later in the academic year.

Student activity

On 18 August, we sent an email to UG, PGT and PGR students with their steps to becoming a Manchester student.

We will be sending follow up emails that are segmented to International students and anyone who lets us know that they are commuters, parents/carers or mature students.

We will also signpost for students to join our Instagram Broadcast Channel – a dedicated space for new students where we are sharing exclusive content. The channel has been running since May 2025 and currently has over 3,700 members who are all offer-holders at The University of Manchester.

The Student Communications team will also be hosting a stall at the Start of Year Fair to share more information with new students.
